Stamped vs. Broom Finish Concrete: Which Is Right for Your Patio?
Choosing a finish for your concrete patio comes down to four things: budget, look, durability, and maintenance. Here's how stamped and broom finishes compare.
Broom finish: the workhorse
A broom finish is exactly what it sounds like — fresh concrete is troweled smooth, then a broom is dragged across the surface to give it texture and slip resistance. It's clean, modern, durable, and easy to maintain.
Best for: modern homes, larger patios on a budget, families with kids and pets.
Stamped concrete: the show-stopper
Stamped concrete uses rubber mats pressed into wet concrete to create patterns — flagstone, slate, brick, wood plank, ashlar, and more. Combined with integral color and accent staining, the results can rival natural stone at a fraction of the cost.
Best for: outdoor living spaces, premium homes, owners who want a custom statement.
Cost comparison
Broom finish typically runs $8–$12 per square foot installed. Stamped concrete runs $14–$22 per square foot depending on pattern complexity, color count, and sealer.
Maintenance
Broom finish is essentially maintenance-free — an occasional rinse and a sealer every 3–5 years. Stamped concrete needs to be resealed every 2–3 years to keep colors vibrant and protect against UV fade.
Our recommendation
For most Central Texas backyards, we recommend broom finish for the bulk of the patio with a stamped or stained border to add character. You get the durability and budget of broom with the visual punch of stamped.
Want to talk through options for your patio? We pour both finishes weekly across Bell, Williamson, Coryell, and Lampasas counties.
