Concrete Tips
What Causes Concrete Cracks?

If you've ever looked at a driveway, patio, or sidewalk and noticed cracks, you're not alone. One of the most common questions we hear at Firm Foundations Concrete is, "Why is my concrete cracking?" The truth is that while some cracking is normal, excessive cracking can often be prevented with proper installation techniques.
1. Natural Shrinkage
As concrete cures, water evaporates from the mixture. This causes the concrete to shrink slightly. Without properly placed control joints, small cracks can form as the concrete relieves stress.
2. Poor Ground Preparation
Concrete is only as strong as the foundation beneath it. If the soil isn't properly compacted before pouring, the ground can settle over time, causing the concrete to crack or shift.
3. Texas Heat and Weather
Central Texas weather can be tough on concrete. Extreme heat causes expansion, while cooler temperatures cause contraction. Over time, these constant changes can create stress that leads to cracking.
4. Tree Roots
Large trees near driveways, patios, and sidewalks can push against concrete as roots grow. This pressure often results in uneven surfaces and cracking.
5. Heavy Loads
Concrete is strong, but every slab is designed for a specific purpose. Parking heavy vehicles on residential driveways not designed for that weight can cause cracking and damage.
6. Improper Concrete Thickness
A driveway that is too thin may not withstand years of vehicle traffic. Professional contractors determine the proper thickness based on the intended use of the slab.
7. Lack of Reinforcement
Rebar and wire mesh help strengthen concrete and reduce movement. Proper reinforcement can significantly increase the lifespan of your concrete investment.
Can Concrete Cracks Be Prevented?
While no concrete is completely crack-proof, proper site preparation, reinforcement, control joints, and professional installation can dramatically reduce the likelihood of major cracking.
At Firm Foundations Concrete, we focus on quality workmanship, proper preparation, and durable materials to help ensure your driveway, patio, sidewalk, or foundation stands the test of time.
